technical

faced my netbook for the whole day revising matlab and sql..

until I couldn concentrate in front of the flickering screen any more (60Hz flicker rate is not detectable by human eyes, but knowing the fact itself can be distracting enough after staring at it for so long)

so i decided to try out new stuff for my netbook again. This time it is the newly released Service Pack 1 for Windows 7.

Unlike the release of Win Vista SP1 when everyone was so anxious about how this SP1 could make Vista run faster and smoother, the casual release of Win 7 SP1 seems to tell how confident M$ is about the performance of win 7. No press conference, no media release.

From the readme file, it seems for Win 7 Sp1, there are no major function changes to the system, but rather the accumulation of all hotfixes and security updates.

Anyway, it took round 10 min to download the 1GB file from campus network. Amazing speed.

On the not-so-interesting side, it took nearly two hours for the installation process to complete in my netbook.

Performance-wise, tried a few games and media decoding, and i could hardly feel any change after upgrading to Win 7 SP 1. That means upgrading to Win 7 SP1 is highly recommended. A series of security and bug fixes w/o affecting the system performance. Why not.
